The significant events that have unfolded in May throughout Indigenous Australian history reflect both the enduring legacy of colonisation and the resilience of Indigenous cultures and communities. As we commemorate these milestones, it is essential to confront the injustices of the past, support ongoing efforts for reconciliation, and work towards a future where all Australians can live with dignity, respect, and equality.

In April, we commemorate the anniversaries of significant events for Australia's First Nations people:

 ~ April 1789 - The arrival of smallpox in the colony of New South Wales

 ~ April 1847 - Mass poisoning of Gubbi Gubbi people near Brisbane.

 ~ April 1867 -  “The Leap” Massacre at Mt Mandarana, near Mackay

 ~ 10 April 1950 - Mick Dodson was born

 ~ 27 April 1971 - Milirrpum v Nabalco Pty Ltd was decided

 ~ 3 April 2023 - Galarrwuy Yunupingu passed away

 ~ 23 March 2022: World No. 1, Ash Barty announced her retirement from tennis

 ~ 27 March 1905: Birth of Jack Patten, Aboriginal Civil Rights Leader

 ~ 29 March 1881: William Barak delivered a petition from the Coranderrk Aboriginal reserve to Parliament House in Melbourne
