The Artwork
Yarla Jukurrpa
This artwork depicts Yarla Jukurrpa, a significant ancestral story associated with an area east of Yuendumu known as Cockatoo Creek.
The place holds special importance for Warlpiri women, who traditionally gather bush foods there, including yarla, or bush potato.
Yarla are fibrous edible tubers that grow beneath low-spreading plants. They are found by searching for cracks in the earth and grow from roots that seek moisture beneath the ground. Once cooked, the tubers become soft and are an important traditional bush food.
The Jukurrpa tells of yarla and wapirti, or bush carrot, ancestors who fought a great battle in this area. The specific site associated with the painting is a mulju, or water soakage, called Ngarparapunyu.
Traditional Warlpiri iconography is used throughout the artwork to represent the Jukurrpa, its associated sites and the foods gathered from Country. Curved ceremonial lines evoke the vine-like tendrils from which flowers grow, while straight lines may represent karlangu, or digging sticks, traditionally used by women to dig for bush foods growing beneath the ground.
The artwork’s flowing forms and earthy palette of red, ochre, terracotta and cream evoke the movement, texture and living richness of the Central Australian landscape.
The Warlpiri people have lived in the Central Desert region for tens of thousands of years. They maintain an enduring physical and spiritual connection to their ancestral homelands and continue to preserve their Jukurrpa stories, cultural knowledge and traditions through art.
About the Artist
Alicka Napanangka Brown
Alicka Napanangka Brown was born in 1998 at Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community approximately 290 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
Alicka paints with the internationally acclaimed Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation at Yuendumu.
She is the daughter of artist Maria Nampijinpa Brown and the granddaughter of respected artist Wendy Nungarrayi Brown. Her sister, Antoinette Napanangka Brown, also paints with Warlukurlangu Artists.
Growing up within a family of artists, Alicka developed a strong grounding in painting by watching her family work and listening to the ancestral stories passed down to her from childhood.
Through her art, Alicka continues this rich family tradition, sharing important stories connected to Country, bush foods and Warlpiri cultural knowledge.
