The Artwork Story
Ngapa Jukurrpa — Mikanji
The original artwork is called Ngapa Jukurrpa, or Water Dreaming. It depicts Mikanji, an important watercourse located on the ancestral homelands of the Warlpiri people in the remote Tanami Desert region of Central Australia.
For much of the year, the watercourse is a dry creek bed. After the annual rains, however, water collects beneath the earth to form underground soakages. Like natural wells, these soakages provide a vital and enduring source of fresh water throughout the long desert dry season.
To the desert-dwelling Warlpiri people, water is the essence of life.
The Ngapa Jukurrpa story has been passed down through countless generations. It reflects the profound spiritual relationship between the Warlpiri people, their ancestors and their Country, preserving knowledge of the land, its precious water sources and the responsibilities connected to caring for them.
Due to the isolation of their traditional homelands, the Warlpiri were among some of the last Aboriginal peoples in Australia to experience sustained contact with Europeans. Their connection to culture, Country and ancestral law remains exceptionally strong.
Through Rosina Napurrurla White’s artwork, this ancient Water Dreaming story is transformed into a luxurious contemporary accessory that carries the beauty, knowledge and spirit of the Australian desert.

Rosina Napurrurla White is a talented Warlpiri artist whose work reflects her deep cultural and spiritual connection to her ancestral homelands.
Through her paintings, Rosina shares important Warlpiri Dreaming stories that have been passed down through generations. Her distinctive use of line, rhythm and colour evokes the movement of water across desert Country and the enduring life sustained by its natural underground wells.
