The Artwork Story
Ngapa Jukurrpa – Wapurtali
Storm Bird Dreaming
This beautiful design is adapted from an authentic Aboriginal artwork by Christine Nakamarra Curtis, an Aboriginal artist who paints with the world-acclaimed Warlukurlangu Artists at Yuendumu.
Yuendumu is a remote Aboriginal community located on the ancestral homelands of the Warlpiri people in the Tanami Desert region of Central Australia.
Founded in 1985, the Aboriginal-owned Warlukurlangu art centre is an important stronghold for the preservation of Warlpiri traditional culture, language and storytelling.
This Ngapa Jukurrpa, or Water Dreaming, comes from Wapurtali, also known as Mt Singleton, west of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory.
For the Warlpiri, water is the essence of life. In the desert, rain brings renewal, abundance and deep cultural meaning. Water Dreaming stories are powerful expressions of Country, ancestral knowledge and connection passed down through many generations.
The story tells of a marlu, or kangaroo, cooked at a place called Jalkirri. The smoke from the fire formed milpirri, or cumulonimbus storm clouds, and rain began to fall. A giant storm travelled across the Country before a bird picked it up and carried it on its wings. When the storm became too heavy, the bird dropped it to the ground.
Through luminous blue colour, flowing movement and rhythmic detail, Christine Nakamarra Curtis’ artwork evokes storm clouds, rain, desert Country and the enduring power of Warlpiri ancestral story.
The result is a radiant wearable art piece that is both beautiful and deeply meaningful.
Why You Will Love It
The Storm Bird Dreaming Modal Scarf is more than an accessory. It is a wearable artwork, an ethical fashion statement and a meaningful connection to the world’s oldest continuous living culture.
Perfect for yourself or as a special gift, it is a timeless Australian piece for those seeking something beautiful, different and made with purpose.

Our Happy Customers
Customer Reviews

Mainie is a brand I proudly wear for so many reasons. I love that each scarf has a story and that I know with each piece funds go back to the woman that designed it. I adore the vibrancy of the colours and the high quality, I have had my scarves for many years now and they are so versatile from wearing them to do presentations or going out for lunch. I stand for empowering women and standing proud in your individuality and Mainie embodies this in every way.

Our Mainie scarves have become an essential wardrobe component both at home and when travelling. They serve to elevate any outfit whilst also celebrating Australian First Nations culture with dignity and sophistication. The silk product is beautiful to wear and the merino wool is unbelievable soft and so warm. Lightweight, easy to pack and always commented on.
Tanya, Emily and Elizabeth

I love the Mainie Scarves, for myself and as the perfect gift. They are investment pieces that will be part of your wardrobe for life. I love travel and one or two scarves are always included in my luggage. They are perfect on the plane and for dressing up outfits. I take a Merino scarf for cooler climates and silk ones everywhere else. However, the very best part is the ethical basis of the brand. I know I support a woman artist from a First Nations community when I purchase something from Mainie. They look good and do good at the same time.
