The bush yam, with its edible tubers, is essential for sustenance and holds deep cultural importance for the Anmatyerre people.
Evelyn Pultara, a highly acclaimed Anmatyerre artist from the Utopia region of the Northern Territory, was born around 1940 at Woodgreen Station near Utopia Station. A mother of six, her art is profoundly grounded in her cultural heritage.
Like her late aunt, the renowned Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and her brother Greeny Purvis, Evelyn’s totem is the bush yam (pencil yam). Painting in acrylic on canvas is both an artistic and spiritual practice for her, expressing her ancestral responsibilities and honouring her Bush Yam Dreaming.
Known for her quiet nature, Evelyn allows her vibrant works to communicate her cultural stories, while her husband Clem, also an artist, often shares the deeper meanings behind them.
Since beginning her painting career in 1997, Evelyn initially depicted traditional subjects such as bush tucker and women’s ceremonial body paint designs, but now focuses exclusively on her bush yam totem.
Evelyn lives in Wilora in the Northern Territory and received national recognition in 2005 when she won the general painting division at the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. Her work has been featured in several solo exhibitions in Sydney and Milan between 2003 and 2005.
